Fructooligosaccharides (FOS) are a type of water-soluble carbohydrate found in many vegetables, such as chicory and onions. When consumed through the diet, they are used by the friendly bacteria of the gut microbiota as a nutritional substrate. This process promotes the growth of the normal intestinal bacterial flora (prebiotic effect).
