FOS are a natural form of soluble carbohydrates found in many vegetables, such as endives and onions. When taken orally, they are only partially absorbed; most of them serve as a nutritional substrate for the growth of the gut’s natural microbiota, especially species of Bifidobacteria and Lactobacillus.
