Standardized maritime pine bark extract (Pine Bark)
Pycnogenol® is a patented extract derived from the bark of the maritime pine tree (Pinus pinaster). The first scientist to investigate the biological actions of maritime pine bark was Dr. Jack Masquelier from the University of Bordeaux.
His research began after studying certain historical references to an unknown substance derived from maritime pine bark, which was reportedly used during the Middle Ages to treat scurvy. The focus of his studies was the naturally occurring proanthocyanidins found in the bark, particularly their antioxidant properties*. In fact, in vitro studies have shown that maritime pine bark extract possesses strong antioxidant properties*, comparable to those of vitamins C and E. This extract was later patented and is now commercially known as Pycnogenol®.
